| Membership: Visitors are welcome
at the club, and we offer introductory flights to anyone interested in trying gliding for
themselves. Each year we also accept a limited number of new club members who want to
learn how to fly sailplanes. Flying with other club members who are licensed instructors,
the students pursue a course of instruction and ground studies which will lead toward
their Glider Pilot Licence, issued by Transport Canada. Usually it takes between 40 and 60
flights before the student will be ready to fly solo.
Because Great Lakes is a club and not a commercial operation, members are encouraged to help out with the various duties and chores around the field, ranging from helping to prepare the aircraft for flight in the morning to assisting at the flight line, and securing the aircraft at the end of the day. Gliding is one of the least expensive ways to fly. Because our instructors are volunteers you pay only for aerotows and rental of the gliders. Our dues includes membership in the Soaring Association of Canada (SAC), insurance, and the bi-monthly national magazine, Free Flight. We get many requests for a single flight gift certificate, and these make excellent presents for a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion. They are available for $100 and we will send you the certificate prior to the event. Upon completion of the flight, the honoured guest receives a commemorative flight certificate. Email us for more information. Full Senior Dues $500 + SAC dues 114 * Tow charges to 2000ft $31.00 The 5 flight package is upgradable to full membership at a discount, but alone is non-receiptable and non-refundable. It must also be used in the current season. Licensed pilots are also required to invest in the club with a one-time refundable interest free debenture, currently at $300. *Full membership is considered upon application to our Membership Committee. |
