Gliding is one of the least expensive ways to fly. Students pursue a course of instruction that leads towards their Glider Pilot Licence, issued by Transport Canada. Our instructors are volunteers, so member students only pay for the aero tow and glider rental. Select one of the options above for further information.

Flying Options
Introductory and guest flights
Visitors are welcome at the club. We offer introductory flights to prospective students and members and guest flights to the simply curious. The duration of a flight depends on local weather conditions. If weather conditions are favourable, a flight is about one-half hour.

Gift certificates
We get many requests for a single flight gift certificate. These make wonderful presents for a birthday, anniversary, mother’s and father’s days or other special occasion. The duration of a flight depends on local weather conditions. If weather conditions are favourable, a flight is about one-half hour.

Five flight instruction packages
Students can learn to fly on a trial basis, without the cost or commitment of a full membership. This package does not include membership in the Soaring Association of Canada and is non-refundable. The five flight instruction package must be used in the current season. However, students can upgrade the five flight package to full membership at a discount.

Full memberships
Each year GLGC accepts a limited number of students and licenced pilots as new members.

Flying Operations
Sailplanes and Towplane
GLGC has two Krosnos. These are two seat gliders (also called sailplanes) that have outstanding performance and offer exceptional visibility for both pilot and passenger on scenic flights.

Our tow plane is a Piper Pawnee, a powerful aircraft that has a proven record in the soaring community for towing all types of sailplanes.

In addition to the GLGC sailplanes and tow plane, there are a number of sailplanes owned by GLGC members on our field. These include high performance sailplanes and visitors to our field have the chance to see up close the latest technology in the sport of soaring.

Instructors
GLGC’s instructors are licenced by Transport Canada as glider pilots. In addition, our instructors have taken and passed the gliding instructors course offered by the Soaring Association of Canada.

Tow Plane Pilots
Our tow plane pilots are licenced by Transport Canada as power plane pilots. Our roster of tow plane pilots includes GLGC members who are both licenced glider pilots and licenced power plane pilots.

Membership in GLGC
Each year GLGC accepts a limited number of students and licenced pilots as new members.

GLGC is a club and not a commercial operation. Members are encouraged to help out with the various duties and chores around the field, ranging from helping to prepare the aircraft for flight in the morning to assisting at the flight line and securing the aircraft at the end of the day.

Most days begin with breakfast in Tottenham, for the early risers and end with refreshments and talk of soaring. It is not uncommon on summer evenings for there to be an impromptu barbeque.

GLGC offers its members a range of soaring opportunities, from local, instructional flights to cross country flights. We have taken our club operations to the annual Ontario provincial soaring contest. We offer our less experienced pilots the opportunity to team up with experienced pilots in competition. Members who are not competing have the opportunity to fly from a field other than our own and over unfamiliar terain. We have also visited our friends at Toronto Soaring Club to give our members the experience of winch launching.

GLGC holds an annual general meeting, typically in late winter or early spring. Every spring, we hold a safety seminar, to prepare us for the much anticipated gliding season.

We also try to get together throughout the year, typically at a pub but also for the occasional “road trip.” Over the years, GLGC has organized ski trips, a trip to the American Soaring Association Annual Convention and trips to Pennsylvania where members have had the opportunity to experience the thrill of “ridge soaring”.
